Day 16 – 11 January 2013. Ushuaia.

Sleep in, no wake up call. Hot night though. We fiddled around with washing and showers before heading for breaky about 8.30. The breaky/bar area has magnificent view Ushuaia and the Beagle Channel.

A bit of photo sorting at breaky, soooo many whale shots.

Spent the day attending to some retail therapy, then during Siesta we tackled two museums, which was interesting. Learnt a bit about the indigenous people to this area – The Yamana and also a little bit about the Selk’nam. Yamara – who basically lived on the water were canoeing people, hunting sea lions and the women collected shellfish etc.

The Selk’nam were more land based and hunted land animals – guanacos etc.

The maritme museum and prison was interesting, big, old and cold. It had lots to learn about early shipping and many, many, many shipwrecks.. Amazing to think the trip ‘round Cape Horn’ was a key passage until the opening of the Panama Canal. Shopped some more after Siesta. Lunch again Ramos Generales. Tried “Mate” tea – pretty bitter, but love the tradition of it.

OMG the biggest Princess Cruise Liner was in port plus another two smaller ships, the city was mad. We gave up and went and had lunch. It was like a shark feeding frenzy fighting these hoards in the shopping areas. Makes you really appreciate the small and intimate ship the Polar Pioneer was.

Bought some souvenirs and checked out many others, but to hotel for a quick rest and to repack with the additional shopping. Also we visited the Supermarket to stock up on water and pepsi.

Met Rob and Gay for Dinner at Freddy’s Seafood. WOW! What a dinner – King Crab – picked from the tank and cooked for us – it was a fantastic feast with great company and a new Mendoza wine. Pablo – our waiter- suggested two crabs for 4 people, but we went for one plus entrees – of squid for us and Mary chose the Grilled King Prawn – both were large and delicious entrees, so we were all plenty full from our one crab. Good fun and a cultural experience to boot. The queue at the door was quite long – so obviously a popular spot.

Stopped to buy some supplies for the bus tomorrow – a 10 hour non stop trip, plus a ferry ride. So we bought some bread and cheese at a little deli, from couple of lovely blokes.

Early start – to be at the bus by 7.40am – off home to pack.

Stopped for coffee at Tante Sara – very nice cappo again. Must get onto Trip Advisor and recommend some of these places.
