Day 18 – 13 January 2013. Day around Punta Arenas.

Day around Punta today, not much happening. Sunday seems a day of rest. Some shops opened about 11.00 then shut again for Siesta at 1.00, not sure if they will open again.

We walked the streets checking out souvenirs then off to Chocolatte for lunch and a couple of hours, maybe 3 sitting over coffee and wi-fi.

Ran into Rob and Gay a couple of times, and met for dinner again at La Luna, fabulous lamb chops.

During the day we found places we hadn’t seen before.

We came across a protest in the Plaza – about the dogs. Using our photos and Google Translate, we think the Council (municipalidad) is culling dogs, so they were protesting that, also calling for responsible ownership. A ute with a black flag was doing blockies around the Plaza de Armas tooting, and being followed by the cops.

Later in the evening we saw officials lowering the Chilean Flag and the protestors had increased – also a dead dog draped over the monument – quite graphic.

We also received a message that our bus to Eco Camp will be leaving at 11.50 tomorrow.
This boat we thought was a wreck, but now decided it is a viable Fishing boat, not on fire.

Sara Braun house or something on the central square.

Streets are deserted Sunday morning, except for a couple of layabout Aussies - Gay and Rob out Geocaching.

Not a eyelid raised by these dogs as people walk past.

Statue in Plaza de Armas.

Chilean flag flying in the square.

A school building I think.

The coat of arms - puma and flamingo.

The Fire brigade.

A clock, barometer, night day, thingo down at the port.

Lowering the flag.

Another view of the statue.
